ACCA Manual J (Eight Edition) consists of procedures and calculations to determine heating and cooling values required for homes. Synonyms: Heat Load, Load Calculation, Load Analysis, Heat Calculations

Every house is built different, they have different efficiency of windows & shading, R-Values & U-Values of structural components, orientation of the house, etc.. Though you may have a same square foot area as your neighbor, it does not mean you will need 5 Ton system. Considering you have better structural components and windows, you may need only 4 Ton system which will save you in equipment cost and even operating cost in long term. Let's say you install 5 Ton system it may create discomfort and high operating and maintenace cost, because what if structural components and windows end up poor than your neighbors, you may need 6 Ton system. It is important to perform heat load calculations, Manual J, and based on heat load analysis, select equipment (Manual S).

Manual S is the set of procedures to determine HVAC equipment based on heat load or Manual J report. The expanded performance data of an equipment is used to determine if system will keep up with the design temperatures as per heat load, Manual J, report.
