Difference between 'VRV' and 'VRF' System
VRV stands for Variable Refrigerant Volume. VRF stands for Variable Refrigerant Flow. Both VRV and VRF are the same system. VRV was coined and copyrighted by Daikin. Other brands started marketing as VRF systems.
Working of VRV / VRF system
We will take light Analogy here as shown in Figure 1. Just like you are able to switch on & off the lights in your room, or some of you can dim the lights, similarly, the ability to control the temperature or switch it off, if unoccupied, is what VRV / VRF system offers to us.
How does VRV / VRF work?
In contrast, to the traditional 1 to 1 Split System, with VRV / VRF system you can connect multiple coils to the condenser as shown in Figure 2. Condenser supplies refrigerant to the coils whenever the coil calls for it.
How is Coil & Condenser Selected?
Equipment is selected based on Manual J. From Manual J, peak load for each zone and block load for the whole house is known. Depending on peak load, coils are selected to meet the indoor design conditions, and depending on block load, condenser is selected to meet the ambient design conditions. The process of selecting equipment is called Manual S.
